Be Ready: How To Prepare for Emergencies
The following is a list of suggested actions residents can take in
preparation for a man-made or natural disaster. Everyone needs to be
prepared! There is great information available at www.ready.gov on
personal preparedness.
Steps You Can Take
Get a Kit
Everyone should have a personal preparedness kit. Services such as water, sewer and electricity can be cut out for several days. While the City of Lebanon Emergency Services stand ready to assist you in an emergency, there may be times depending on the demands and limited resources, that a resident may need to be self-sufficient for several days in the event of a natural disaster. We will make every attempt to address your needs but calls for service will be prioritized based on life safety.Have enough food, water, and critical supplies to take care of each person in your household for up to 72 hours. Information on what you should have in your kit can be found at www.ready.gov.
Make a Plan
You and your family may not be together during an emergency. Families should develop a plan for making contact with each other, such as through an out of state family member during an emergency.Stay Informed
Local authorities may not immediately be able to provide information on what is happening and what you should do. However, you should listen to your battery operated or hand crank NOAA Weather Radio watch TV, listen to the radio or check the Internet often for official news and instructions as they become available. For more information, visit the NOAA Weather Radio website.Do not use electrical items such as computers or television sets as power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
A corded telephone should only be used in an emergency, but cordless phones and cell phones are safe to use. Also, remember that cordless telephones require power and will not operate during a power outage.
